Got the second chain hooked up to the tail wheel today although not without a few scrapes and bruises. Here's the method I finally used; First, took a piece of string and looped it twice between the spring and the quick link and tied it into a square knot. Took a short scrap piece of aluminum tube and twisted one side of the loop with it until the spring expanded enough so I could hook the chain into the quick link. Untwisted the string allowing the spring to retract and screw together the quick link securing the chain in place.
Also, I used safety wire on the turnbuckles to keep them from unscrewing. After I tighened the turnbuckles, I discovered that the steering bar was no longer tight. So, I took some links and added them to the rudder cable in the cockpit. Now, everything is happy.
