New Wing Racks

Work Space

This weekend I worked on remaking my wing racks. The old ones are too close together and the strut brackets will poke through the cloth when I get them covered. I did some research on line looking at other wing racks others have made and decided on a design of my own. The idea being the wings will set in a slot and lean into the center.

First, I went to Lowes on Saturday and got 4 1x8x4 pine boards, 1 1x6x4 pine board, and 2 1x4x4 pine boards. Each end piece consists of 2 1x8 board connect in an upside down "T". To make the slot in the cross member, I measure the center of the board and then 4" off center on each side. I then measured 4" from each end on the bottom. I then took a 3" circular saw and cut a hole in the corner. Marking a line from the bottom of the circle to the offset center, I cut out the rest on both side.

I then marked a 3/4" wide by 2" slot near the top of both vertical pieces and trimmed the top to be 4". This gave me two pieces of scrap to use as buttresses for both vertical pieces. Cut the corners out of the one 1x6 and a 3/4" by 6" slot in the center to move the rack around.

Thought a bit and decided to use steel corner brackets to connect the 1x4's to the bottom of the end pieces. Mounted all four on the end pieces while the glue was drying. Made sure the slots on the vertical piece and the 1x6 fit smoothly together.

I'll post pictures in the next day or so. Decided that I may need to look into mounting castors on it to move it around when I do rib lacing.
